About US

Gray Elementary School is named after Wilmer Oscar Gray, known as “Professor Gray,” an educator with MISD from 1946 to 1970. He began his teaching career in Crandall in 1930. Mr. Gray served as the principal, teacher and bus driver at George Washington Carver. When segregation ended in 1964, the students at Carver were moved to previously all-white schools. Mr. Gray was in charge of the our district's textbooks but more importantly, he served as a liaison between the Carver families and the MISD administration. Mr. Gray was instrumental in helping the community through this transitional period.

Mr. Gray demonstrated his dedication to education in his personal life, as well. He and his wife, Ocie, had nine children. Together, the nine children have a total of 18 degrees. One is a physician, three are electrical and mechanical engineers, another is a mathematician and the remaining four are educators. Mr. Gray and his wife dedicated their lives to education before passing away.
